A man praised across Australia for confronting a gunman during the Bondi Beach attack has spoken publicly for the first time since the incident.
Ahmed al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old Syrian-born resident of Sydney, is recovering in hospital after being shot while trying to stop one of the attackers. From his hospital bed, he has now shared a short but emotional message thanking people for their support.
His actions during the attack have drawn widespread admiration, with political leaders and members of the public describing him as a hero.
The moment that turned Ahmed al-Ahmed into a hero
The incident unfolded on Sunday evening at Bondi Beach in Sydney, where crowds had gathered near the waterfront.
Video footage circulating online shows al-Ahmed using a parked car as cover while moving toward an armed man who was firing a rifle. Moments later, he rushed forward and grappled with the attacker from behind.
After a tense struggle, he managed to wrestle the weapon away.
Authorities say the confrontation may have prevented further casualties during the attack, which left 15 people dead.

A message of gratitude from his hospital bed
Al-Ahmed is currently being treated at St George Hospital in southern Sydney after undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds.
In a video shared by Turkish broadcaster TRT World, he addressed supporters while lying in his hospital bed.
Speaking in Arabic, he thanked people who had reached out during his recovery.
“I appreciate the efforts of everyone,” he said. “May God reward you and grant you wellbeing.”
He also described the experience as extremely difficult, adding that he hoped to recover soon and asked his mother to pray for him.
Visits from Australian leaders
Al-Ahmed has received visits from several senior Australian figures while recovering in hospital.
Governor-General Sam Mostyn visited him and expressed gratitude on behalf of the country, saying Australians had been deeply moved by his bravery.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns also shared a photograph with him online, calling him a “real-life hero” for confronting the attacker.
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese later visited as well. During the meeting, he praised al-Ahmed’s courage and told him his actions had inspired people across the country.

What authorities say about the Bondi Beach attack
Police say the violence occurred at around 6:40pm local time during celebrations near the beach.
Two suspects have been identified in local media as a father and son. One of the alleged attackers died following the incident, while the second was reported to be in critical condition.
Investigators say emergency services quickly responded to the scene, with armed police securing the area shortly afterward.
The attack has prompted widespread discussion about community safety and resilience in Australia.

A reminder of courage during tragedy
The events at Bondi Beach shocked the country, leaving families grieving and communities searching for answers.
Yet amid the tragedy, al-Ahmed’s actions have become a powerful example of individual courage.
Former Australian Prime Minister John Howard praised the moment he confronted the gunman, calling it an extraordinary act of bravery.
For many Australians, the story has become a reminder that even in moments of chaos, ordinary people sometimes step forward in remarkable ways.
As Ahmed al-Ahmed continues his recovery, the message he shared from hospital reflects a quiet humility that has resonated widely: gratitude for the support he has received, and hope for better days ahead.
